The DISCOVERER project aims to study new technologies and techniques for the development of platforms for Earth Observation satellites in Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO). To carry out this project, DISCOVERER will use new aerodynamic materials, aerodynamic control, as well as electric propulsion based on the use of the residual atmosphere in order to compensate for aerodynamic drag. It is expected that future generations of satellites will be smaller, lighter and cheaper than the current ones, and that in turn an improvement in the resolution and quality of the final product will be obtained.

This would reduce the cost of European programs such as maritime surveillance, intelligence and security, security in agriculture and food, land control and natural disaster monitoring. Europe is also expected to be a leader in the development and exploitation of these new technologies.

Elecnor Deimos, through its subsidiary in Castilla la Mancha Deimos Satellite System, contributes in this project with the design and analysis of platform technology, and with the system requirements at the integration level. In addition, the company will be responsible for the analysis of the state of the art, commercial activities and the exploitation of technologies and operations derived from orbiting in VLEO. It will also take part in the dissemination of the project.

The objective of DISCOVERER is the study of smaller, lighter and cheaper earth observation satellites, of higher resolution and operating in VLEO.
