Sentinel-3 measures systematically Earth’s oceans, land, ice and atmosphere to monitor and understand large-scale global dynamics. It will provide essential information in near-real time for ocean and weather forecasting. While Sentinel-3 will provide enhanced continuity of satellites such as Envisat and Spot, the sheer breadth of data from this new mission means that it is set to be the workhorse for Copernicus.

Deimos has participated in the definition of GMES/Copernicus, focusing on the mission analysis for the study of Copernicus’ Architecture, as well as on the security dimension relative to Space Infrastructure and Operational Concepts. For the particular case of Sentinel-3A, Deimos was responsible for the mission analysis during the phases A, B, C, and D, as well as for the Independent Software Validation.

Deimos also contributed to the payload exploitation, being in charge of Sentinel-3’s end-to-end simulator, the optical instrument processor prototypes and MWR radiometer, and participating in the team that deployed the Mission Performance Centre. Moreover, Deimos has been responsible for the development of the operational processors of the products of level 0, and level 1 of the Sea and Land Surface Temperature Radiometer (SLSTR), MicroWave Radiometer (MWR), and Synergy. The multi-spectral images of these products contain information about the sea’s temperature and pollution, ice conditions, land use, forest coverage and other environmental parameters.
